== Historical Background ==
A creature from classic folklore which was described as a giant rooster with some lizard or dragon-like characteristics. It was reported to be hatched from a hen's egg laid in the nest of a serpent or in some accounts a toad. The Cockatrice could turn people to stone by looking at them, or in some accounts breathing on them. It is considered similar to, yet different from the Basilisk (see [[Basilic]]), which is hatched from a serpent's egg in a hen's nest.
