Historical Background
Enkelados was one of the Gigantes (giants) in Greek mythology. Enkelados was defeated by Zeus using a thunderbolt in the Gigantomachy (war between the Olympians and the Gigantes) or by Athena in alternate accounts. Enkelados means "to urge on" and is a derivative of a battle charge (enkeleuo).
Enceladus (the Romanized spelling of the name) is one of the moons of Saturn. It was discovered on August 28th, 1789 by William Herschel. It has a 504km diameter and is one of the brighest objects in the solar system, reflecting 90% of all sunlight reaching it. It has this property since the moon is composed almost entirely of water-ice. Enceladus is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the E Ring in Saturn's ring system. The moon has been discovered to be geologically active. There may be some liquid water beneath the surface of the ice, making it be a potential place where life beyond Earth could exist in the solar system.
